“Songs through Sign” performance showcase talents of adults with disABILITIES
Metro Parks’ dynamic program helps those with disabilities live their dreams
Nashville, TN --- Participants in Metro Parks’ disABILITIES Program take to the Chaffin Barn stage to showcase their musical and dancing talent in “Songs through Sign,” an annual fundraising gala to raise funds for additional programming. The event, scheduled for 6 p.m., Monday, April 18 at the Chaffin Barn Dinner Theater, is located at 8204 Highway 100, Nashville, TN, 37221.
“If you want to make a difference in the world, then you must be different from the world,” said Glen Adkins, director of the program. “We want people to know that a person can live their life and live out their dreams, even in the face of an intellectual and developmental challenge.”
“Songs through Sign” will feature musical performances, singing, dancing, bucket drumming and even a special appearance by the disABILITIES Cheerleaders. In addition to the show, there will be dinner and a silent auction. All of the proceeds from the event will go towards programming arts & crafts, music, drama, fitness classes, sports training and more for the participants.
The Parks Department has offered a supervised recreation program for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities for more than 40 years. Offered throughout the year are adult day programs, a bowling league, and a variety of "Community Day" activities for various ages. During the summer months, day camps are offered for both adults and high school age youth. In addition, Metro Parks partners with other local agencies including the Sports 4 All Foundation, Special Olympics Nashville, and Best Buddies Vanderbilt to offer special activities throughout the year. The disABILITIES Program also works with MTA's Access Ride to help transportation.
